10/14/2017 (Nigeria) - Local media reports indicate that two suspected robbers were killed on Friday, 13 October, in a firefight with police on the Sagamu-Benin road in Ogun State. The suspected bandits were reportedly among a group robbing vehicles in the Ogun Waterside section of the route who were confronted by police responding to an emergency call. The police reportedly engaged the suspects in a protracted firefight during which two were killed and one arrested. However, several other members of the gang are reported to have escaped during the incident. According to police, an operation has since been launched in the area to track down the other suspected robbers. Banditry is relatively common on rural routes in Nigeria with criminals frequently taking advantage of heavy traffic or poor road conditions to ambush drivers and rob them of their valuables, particularly during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Assailants are typically armed and often fire on vehicles to force the driver to stop.

Those in Ogun State are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and to remain apprised of any associated police operations. Due to the risk of kidnap for ransom and other criminal activity, travellers undertaking overland travel in Nigeria are advised to do so with comprehensive security measures in place. In order to reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep travel itineraries discreet; and vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to police.
