10/14/2017 (Thailand) - Local media reports on Saturday, 14 October, indicate that provincial authorities have announced the implementation of increased security measures across the deep south ahead of and around the 13th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident on 25 October. Dozens of Muslim protesters died during the Tak Bai incident in 2004 after they were detained by police and suffocated whilst being transported in lorries from the Narathiwat province town of Tak Bai. The anniversary of the event has since been used by insurgents in the region to create unrest in the region and has seen attacks on security forces in past years. Security measures implemented around the anniversary are expected to include increased police checkpoints and more frequent security forces patrols in the region. Separatist insurgents in Thailand's restive deep south frequently stage attacks on security personnel and installations, as well as against local leaders, religious figures, teachers and civilians believed to be working with the government. Foreign nationals are rarely targeted in insurgency-related attacks, although bystanders and passers-by can be exposed to incidental violence due to the indiscriminate methods used by the assailants.

Those in the region should monitor local media sources for further updates on the security measures and any associated restrictions in their particular area of operations. Travellers in the deep south are advised to maintain good situational awareness at all times and subject all overland travel to comprehensive security risk management protocols. Any suspicious items or activity should be immediately reported to security forces.
