10/14/2017 (South Africa) - According to reports from local media outlets on Friday, 13 October, members of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), the largest teacher's union in South Africa, have staged a demonstration in Durban intending to promote reform to the education sector. Several thousand union members and affiliates attended the demonstration in the city's central business district. The union has also announced its intent to continue similar actions in the future, having already scheduled a similar rally in Pretoria for Tuesday, 17 October.

Those in South Africa should monitor local media sources for related developments, especially any announcements of further union organised demonstrations. Travellers should anticipate delays on major transport routes in the vicinity of rallies and factor these into travel itineraries, planning alternative routes where possible. Although most union-led demonstrations in South Africa receive legal approval, travellers are nevertheless reminded to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in the country due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and opportunistic crime.
