10/14/2017 (Philippines) - According to reports from local media sources on Friday, 13 October, at least three suspected militants believed to be associated with the Islamic State (IS)-linked Abu Sayyaf group have been arrested in the Bulibangao area of Banguingui, Sulu province. Security forces also recovered a cache of firearms during the operation, which brought the number of detained Abu Sayyaf suspects arrested this year up to 120.

Travellers should be aware that parts of Sulu and Basilan province remain strongholds of Abu Sayyaf and the group continues to conduct attacks on and kidnappings of security forces personnel and civilians in the region. To reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep travel itineraries discreet; vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles; and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces. Travellers should be aware of the persistent threat from militant activity in various areas of the southern Philippines and are advised to coordinate any operationally-critical travel in the region with a trusted security provider.
