10/14/2017 (Ghana) - According to reports from local media sources on Friday, 13 October, students at the University of Professional Studies in Accra have staged a protest against the construction of a fuel station near the campus, following the deadly explosion at a petroleum station on 7 October. The government has subsequently introduced new regulation to improve safety standards at all sites storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) such as the one involved in the incident. The student body has reportedly declared its intention to continue protesting unless construction is halted.

Clients in-country should monitor local media reports for updates relating to the wider issue of LPG storage, due to its demonstrable capacity to prompt local unrest. Travellers should minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gathering in Accra due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence.
