10/13/2017 (Brazil) - According to reports from local media sources on Thursday, 12 October, at least two people have been killed and a further four injured after unidentified gunmen attacked a bar in the Duque de Caxias area of the wider Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. It is unclear whether specific individuals were targeted or if the incident was opportunistic or indiscriminate.

Crime is a major concern for travellers in Brazil, particularly in major cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Those in major Brazilian urban centres are advised to exercise a high level of situational awareness due to the threat from criminal activity and should minimise time spent in areas with known high crime rates. Travellers should maintain a low profile and avoid ostentatious displays of relative wealth in order to reduce the risk of exposure to opportunistic crime.
