10/13/2017 (Kenya) - According to reports from local media outlets, Nairobi authorities have closed Uhuru Park in the capital to the public until 20 October, ostensibly to give security forces time to prepare for Mashujaa Day celebrations, to be held in the park on that date, although it is likely the decision was also influenced by the park serving as a gathering point for protestors in weeks. Authorities have taken a robust stance against a protest movement encouraged by the political opposition National Super Alliance (NASA). On 12 October, national authorities outlawed demonstrations in the central business districts of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Travellers should exercise a heightened level of situational awareness in Kenya at this time due to the elevated tensions around the election rerun. Travellers should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any planned or spontaneous demonstrations in their particular area of operations. All demonstrations and political gatherings should be avoided due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as security forces crowd dispersal operations.
