10/13/2017 (Colombia) - According to reports from local media sources on Thursday, 12 October, trade unionists and student organisations demonstrated in central Medellin in a protest aimed at professing solidarity with striking pilots from the national airline Avianca. During the demonstration, attendees blocked access to several roads in the city centre, prompting local security forces to deploy tear gas to disperse the protestors.
Travellers should avoid the vicinity of protests and demonstrations in order to mitigate the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police crowd control measures. Clients undertaking overland travel within the city are advised to review journey plans due to the potential for disruption. Monitor local media sources for related developments and to remain cognisant of local tensions.
