10/13/2017 (Colombia) - According to reports from local media sources on Thursday, 12 October, the death toll from recent clashes between security forces and coca farmers in Tumaco municipality, Narino department, has risen to at least seven. Dozens of others were injured in the incident. Security forces have disputed the allegations and blamed dissident fighters from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) group for the violence, though in spite of this have suspended several senior local police officers. Colombia's military often forcibly eradicates coca crops across the country as part of efforts to curb Colombia's drug trade, prompting clashes with farmers that rely on the crop for their livelihoods. Security forces clashed with farmers in the Morales area of Cauca Department, to the north-west, in early September, leading to a number of fatalities.

Those conducting travel outside of major cities in Colombia are advised to subject all journeys to a comprehensive localised threat assessment and liaise with local authorities to identify areas with active militant and security operations. Monitor local media sources for related developments and to remain cognisant of local tensions. Recent events in Tumaco have prompted demonstrations nationwide, therefore prior to and during deployment to Colombia, clients should monitor local media sources for related updates.
