10/12/2017 (South Africa) - According to local media reports on Thursday, 12 October, protests are ongoing at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town over the disciplinary treatment of a number of students attending the university. The Higher Education and Training Minister has condemned the action and riot police have been sent to suppress the gathered crowds. Protests are likely to continue as the government's response, in turn, has incited further violent action.

Clients in Cape Town are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the event and to remain apprised of any further demonstrations in the city. Travellers should minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and police crowd dispersal operations.
