10/12/2017 (Pakistan) - Emerging media sources report that Pakistani troops have freed a North American family on Thursday, 12 October, that was held hostage by Afghan Taliban militants for the last five years. The operation was conducted in the Kurram tribal district along the Afghan border. The army reportedly recovered one Canadian and four American nationals, which are likely Joshua Boyle and his wife Caitlan Coleman who were kidnapped during a backpacking trip in Afghanistan 2012.

Foreigners are frequently deliberately targeted by militant activity in Afghanistan, including kidnapping for ransom and assassination operations. The border region with Afghanistan remains an extreme-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security procedures and journey management protocols in place. Clients should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services. Security at residences and workplaces should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
