10/12/2017 (Pakistan) - Media sources report that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued an arrest warrant for the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, Imran Khan, on Thursday, 12 October. Reports indicate that the arrest warrant was issued for a contempt of court case and for repeatedly failing to send a written apology for absence in court. A spokesperson for the Imran Khan has stated that they would challenge the warrant in the Islamabad High Court.
Travellers are advised that if Imran Khan is taken into custody that protests are likely to be planned in the vicinity of government buildings in Islamabad. Those in Islamabad are advised to anticipate disruption to overland travel and should account for this in their travel itineraries, avoiding the courthouse and surrounding area. Clients should anticipate a visible increase in security personnel and heed any directives issued by authorities. Travellers should minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in Pakistan due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime, and incidental violence.
