10/12/2017 (Ethiopia) - According to local media reports on Thursday, 12 October, four people have been killed and 20 others injured after police used lethal force to disperse Oromo protesters in Shashemene, Southern Ethiopia. The protesters have denounced the country's political leadership and are demanding the release of detainees. This is the largest outbreak of violence in Oromia since the large-scale killings in the summer of 2016.

Those in Ethiopia should exercise a high level of caution in the Oromia region. Travellers should monitor local media and liaise with in-country sources to remain apprised of security operations and any planned gatherings in their particular area of operations. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings in Ethiopia, including Irreecha events, due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as aggressive police crowd dispersal operations.
