10/12/2017 (Somalia) - Media sources report on Thursday, 12 October, that Puntland Maritime Police Forces have shot and killed an Iranian captain and injured another sailor in a security operation in the Indian Ocean. Reports indicate that officials tried to stop and board two vessels that were fishing illegally on 6 October in Somali waters. When the vessel ignored repeated warning the police officers opened fire on the vessels. One of the boats has been seized and is being docked at Bosaso port whilst the other vessel was able to get away.

Clients operating in coastal areas of Somalia are advised to closely monitor the piracy situation in the region and ensure that all appropriate risk mitigation protocols are in place prior to departure. Travellers should be aware that Somalia remains an extreme risk operational environment, and as such, all deployments should be subject to the strictest possible security risk management measures in coordination with local authorities and a trusted security provider. Security procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the evolving local threat environment.
