Government Bans Demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu

10/12/2017 (Kenya) - Media sources report that the Kenyan government has banned demonstrations and political rallies on Thursday, 12 October in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. An internal security minister has stated that the ban has been introduced to protect lives and properties within the central business districts of the cities. The order has been instigated following weeks of demonstrations after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the election held in August. Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for daily protests after demands to replace election officials was not met.

Travellers should exercise a heightened level of situational awareness in Kenya at this time due to the elevated tensions around the re-election vote.
