10/12/2017 (Japan) - According to local media reports on Thursday, 12 October, the eruption of the Shinmoedake volcano in southwestern Japan, for the first time in six years, has distributed ash clouds over nearby cities and towns. The volcano on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures started erupting on Wednesday. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 3 warning (the third highest in a five-tier warning system). Continued ash-fall from the volcano could disrupt flights to and from airports in the region. Flights are however currently operating as normal at Kagoshima (KOJ) and Miyazaki (KMI) airports.
Those in the region are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the volcanic activity and to remain apprised of any local government advisories. Travellers should heed any directives issued by local authorities, including mandatory evacuation orders. Any travellers with flights to or from KMI and KOJ airports should contact their airline prior to departure to check the status of their flight.
