Protests in Srinagar Turn Violent as Crowds Pelt Police With Stones

10/11/2017 (India) - According to local media reports on Wednesday, 11 October, a protest against recent braid chopping incidents in Srinagar descended into violence after crowds began pelting police with stones after they were asked to disperse. The incident happened in the Batamaloo area of the city as locals protested against alleged police inaction over the attacks which have caused fear in after several women have been targeted in recent weeks. Police used force to disperse the protesters but the market area remains closed. The police have formed special investigation teams to investigate the attacks and apprehend the culprits.

Those in Srinagar are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the situation and be aware of the possibility of further unrest. Travellers should heed all directives issued by security forces and local authorities and observe any extraordinary security measures that may be in place, including curfews.
