10/11/2017 (South Sudan) - According to regional media sources on Wednesday, 11 October, a brief firefight occurred between South Sudanese army personnel and fighters from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) near Pagak town in Upper Nile State. It is indicated that rebel forces launched an assault on government defensive positions, but were repulsed following a short exchange of gunfire. There have been no reports of casualties at this time. Government forces and SPLM-IO rebels have clashed over Pagak town, a rebel stronghold, for several months.

Those in the Pagak area are advised to exercise extreme caution given the risk of further fighting in the area and should review contingency and evacuation plans in case of a rapid deterioration in the local security environment. Travellers should monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts for further updates on the situation in their particular area of operations and heed any directives issued by authorities. Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling outside of Juba due to the high risk of violent crime and military activity. All operationally-critical travel should be conducted in coordination with a trusted security provider following a comprehensive localised threat assessment.
