Rain Causes Major Disruption to Traffic in New South Wales

10/11/2017 (Australia) - According to local media reports on Wednesday, 11 October, wet weather and slippery roads have caused multiple traffic collisions in New South Wales (NSW) causing widespread disruption to travel. The Hume motorway was closed in both directions at 0830hrs (2130UTC Tuesday, 10 October) after a truck crashed and caught alight at the Wingecarribee Bridge at Berrima, causing major delays. In another incident, a driver skidded onto rail tracks at Penshurst station at around 0900hrs (2100 UTC, 10 October) causing delays on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line. A further incident occurred in North Sydney after a vehicle rolled at a busy intersection at the corner of Berry and Walker streets creating delays for peak hours commuters.
Those in New South Wales are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather-related updates and to remain apprised of any directives issued by local authorities. Ongoing travel disruption should be anticipated in rain areas in the medium term and accounted for in travel itineraries where possible. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in rain affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions causing slippery roads and hazardous driving conditions.
