09/21/2017 (Bahrain) - The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued updated travel advice on Thursday, 21 September, warning travellers of the potential for anti-government demonstrations during the upcoming Ashura religious festival. Events during the Shiite religious festival are generally expected to remain peaceful but, given the sectarian tensions on the island, anti-government demonstrations may be organised on the fringes of the public events.
Anti-government demonstrations in Bahrain are frequently met with a strong security forces response, typically involving the use of tear gas, road blocks and stun grenades. Travellers are advised to avoid any demonstrations and political gatherings in the country due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Those in Bahrain are advised to monitor local media sources to remain apprised of protests and associated security operations in their particular area and any travel disruption resulting from these activities.
