09/21/2017 (Yemen) - Media reports indicate that Houthi rebels and groups aligned with former president Ali Abdullah Saleh staged a large rally in the rebel-held capital Sanaa on Thursday, 21 September, celebrating the third anniversary of their capture of the city. Tens of thousands are reported to have gathered for the rally in Sabaeen Square amid tight security. Security forces in the city are reported to have been placed on high alert, searching vehicles entering the area around the square and increasing checkpoints on routes into the city. Saudi-led coalition aircraft are also reported to have flown over the gathering in a show of force.

Those in Sanaa are advised to avoid the area around Sabaeen Square in the immediate term due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Due to the ongoing conflict and extreme risk environment, clients should reconsider all non-essential travel to Yemen at this time. Those in the country should minimise non-essential movement outside of secure compounds and only travel with maximum security precautions in place. Prior to deployment, or as part of any pre-operational decision-making, clients are advised to conduct a thorough localised risk assessment to identify any potential threats to operations and staff safety.
