Security Forces Engage Suspected Islamist Militants, Zamboanga Sibugay

09/21/2017 (Philippines) - Media reports indicate that at least one suspected Islamist militant was killed on Thursday, 21 September, in a clash with security forces near the town of Naga, in Zamboanga Sibugay province. Security forces engaged at least seven suspected militants in an extended gunfight, which left at least one militant dead. Operations have been launched in the area to apprehend the suspected militants who escaped from the scene of the encounter.

Travellers should be aware that a recently-extended state of emergency remains in place across Mindanao and are advised to heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities. Those with operations in the region area are advised to review security and contingency measures in light of the militant threat to ensure they remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
