09/20/2017 (Mali) - Local media reports indicate that a number of buildings were damaged on the morning of Wednesday, 20 September, when suspected militants launched an attack on a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp in the northeast city of Kidal. The attackers are reported to have attempted to overrun two forward operating bases on the outskirts of the town before launching a prolonged mortar attack on the main MINUSMA camp in the city. There are currently no reports of any casualties from the attack but several accommodation buildings and supply stockpiles are reported to have been damaged by mortar strikes. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but MINUSMA operating bases have come under regular mortar attacks in recent months including a similar attack in Kidal in June.

Those with operationally-critical travel requirements in the Kidal region should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify areas with ongoing security operations in the region. Contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
