09/20/2017 (Philippines) - Media reports indicate that at least nine suspected Maoist rebels were killed on Wednesday, 20 September, in a clash with security forces in the northern province of Nueva Ecija. The group of 15 suspected New People's Army (NPA) militants were reportedly spotted by security forces in a village in a rural area of the province and engaged the soldiers in a 25 minute firefight. At least one soldier is reported to have been injured in the incident. The incident is believed to be one of the most significant clashes between the group and security forces since strained peace talks collapsed in May.
Those in Nueva Ecija province should anticipate localised disruption in the area of the incident in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operations and are advised to exercise a heightened level of vigilance, immediately reporting any suspicious items or activity to security forces. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and associated security operations and heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities. Travellers in areas of the country where the NPA and other militant groups are known to operate are advised to subject all operations to a thorough location-specific threat assessment and should ensure that risk mitigation measures commensurate to the local security environment are in place.
