09/20/2017 (South Africa) - Local media reports on Wednesday, 20 September, indicate that two administration buildings at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) campuses in Cape Town have been damaged in arson attacks. A staff office at the university's Mowbray campus was reportedly set alight in an attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning while a petrol bomb was thrown at a finance office at the Belville campus earlier on Tuesday evening. The attacks are believed to be linked to a dispute over accommodation standards and student safety at the institution and follow a similar petrol bomb attack on a workshop at the central Cape Town campus on Monday.

Those in Cape Town are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incidents and any associated police operations. Travellers should exercise caution in the vicinity of CPUT campuses, particularly after dark, and immediately report any suspicious activity to police. Whilst the recent attacks are likely to have been carried out by an individual or small group of students, travellers should be aware of the potential for student demonstrations on and around CPUT campuses in the medium term. Any demonstrations should be avoided due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
