09/20/2017 (Italy) - Media sources report that police have arrested 50 suspected members of the Sacra Corona Unita, an organised crime organisation, on Wednesday, 20 September in the southern province of Apulia. Reports indicate that the police have been building a case for over a year and executed arrest warrants in Lecce, Brindisi and in Taranto, where the organisation is especially active.
Travellers in Puglia are advised to monitor local media sources for related updates. Although organised crime rarely affects foreign nationals, travellers are advised to remain vigilant. There may also be an incidental risk of violence during police operations against Mafia elements.
