09/20/2017 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - Media reports indicate that at least ten people have been killed and a further 92 are missing on Wednesday, 20 September, after a river in the Masisi district of North Kivu province burst its banks. Torrential rains reportedly caused significant flooding in the Bihambwe area of the district and emergency teams have since been deployed to the town. Environmental hazards including earthquakes, flooding and landslides present a significant risk in eastern areas of the DRC. In August, at least 200 people were killed when heavy rains triggered a landslide which buried a fishing village in Ituri province.

Those in North Kivu province are advised to avoid the Bihambwe area in the immediate term due to the flooding and ongoing emergency response operations. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further weather-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Travellers in eastern areas of the DRC should review contingency measures to minimise impact on business continuity. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in flood-affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding and debris.
