09/20/2017 (Libya) - Local media reports on Wednesday, 20 September, indicate that the Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia remains closed leaving hundreds stranded. The border crossing was shut on Sunday but the reasons for the closure are unclear. Initial reports suggested that the crossing had been closed due to violent clashes between militia forces linked to a prominent smuggler and others aligned with the Government of National Accord (GNA) in the town of Sabratah, around 60km (37 miles) west of Tripoli. However, later media articles stated that the closure was due to protests in the Tunisian town of Ben Guerdane prompted by a Libyan crackdown on smugglers using the crossing.

Those intending to travel via the Ras Ajdir crossing or relying on the route as part of evacuation contingency plans should monitor local media sources for further updates on the closure and any associated unrest. Tunisia has closed the Ras Ajdir border crossing on several occasions due to violence and instability in Libya and travellers should account for this in travel contingency plans, selecting alternative routes or options where available. Travellers should reconsider all non-essential movement outside of secure compounds in Libya given the current instability and conflict situation and remain vigilant at all times. Security and contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to local threat environment.
