09/20/2017 (Spain) - Media sources report that police officers have conducted several raids on Catalan government buildings in Barcelona on Wednesday, 20 September. Local media sources have stated that two Catalan politicians were detained during searches at the Catalan economy and finance ministry and the foreign affairs ministry. The raids come two weeks before Catalonia's planned referendum, which the Spanish government considers illegal.

Travellers should be wary of the possibility of protests in Barcelona following the raids. Those in the area are advised to avoid the vicinity of protests and demonstrations in order to mitigate the risk of exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime and police crowd control measures. Clients undertaking overland travel within the city are advised to review journey plans as a result of heightened security in the aforementioned areas.
