09/20/2017 (Guinea) - The US Embassy in Conakry issued a security message on Tuesday, 19 September, warning travellers of a 'ville morte' general strike planned for Thursday, 21 September. Numerous businesses and services are expected to be closed on Thursday due to the strike although the expected impact from the industrial action is currently unclear. The opposition Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UDFG) has staged a number of anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks with further protests expected in the Conakry on 20 and 27 September.
Those in Guinea are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the 'ville morte' and to remain apprised of any associated disruption in their particular area of operations. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Guinea due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
