09/20/2017 (Malawi) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 20 September, at least 17 people have been arrested in Mulanje town, Southern Region, following an uptick in cultist related violence. At least three people have reportedly been killed and several others attacked by suspected members of cults practicing vampirism and witchcraft. The Mulanje area, especially Mount Mulanje, is a popular tourist destination, but there is no indication that foreigners are specifically targeted.

Those in Mulanje should monitor local media sources for any further updates on the incident. Travellers should maintain a heightened level of situational awareness in Malawi and minimise time spent in areas known for high levels of criminal activity. Whilst criminality is most prominent in urban areas of the country, clients should be mindful of the threat of violent criminality in the country's rural area.
