09/20/2017 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to regional media outlets on Wednesday, 20 September, at least one soldier from the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) was killed and another wounded following an attack by rebels from the Alliance of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group in the Beni area of North Kivu. A combined FARDC-MONUSCO position in the Mbau-Kamango Axis reportedly came under attack on Sunday, 17 September. Following the attack, FARDC forces carried out raids in the nearby area to track down the assailants. FARDC forces frequently clash with the Uganda-based ADF rebels in North Kivu state.
Instability persists across the eastern regions of the DRC, particularly North Kivu province, and numerous armed groups are known to operate in the region. Essential travel in the area should be subjected to the strictest possible security risk management procedures, including contracting armed private security and using vehicles equipped with radios. Personnel operating in the DRC are advised to regularly review their crisis management plans and security measures to ensure they remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
