09/20/2017 (India) - Media reports on Wednesday, 20 September, indicate that Mumbai has been hit by flooding and severe travel disruption following heavy rains which hit the city on Tuesday evening. A number of major roads and many minor routes in the city are reported to be flooded following the monsoon rains and the local rail network is reported to be facing significant flood-related disruption. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) is also reported to be facing severe disruption on Wednesday with Indigo, Jet Airways and Vistara cancelling a number of flights due to weather conditions and runway closures. At least 50 flights are currently reported to have been cancelled. Mumbai is susceptible to floods, particularly during monsoon season from June to September, with building on floodplains and inadequate infrastructure exacerbating the issue. In August, at least 14 people were killed following similar monsoon flooding in the city.

Those in Mumbai are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather and flood-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Those with operations in the region should review contingency measures to minimise impact on business continuity. Travellers should anticipate significant weather-related disruption in the region in the immediate to medium term and should factor this into itineraries, allowing additional time and planning alternative routes where possible. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in flood-affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding and debris.
