09/19/2017 (Kenya) - Local media reports indicate that Jubilee party supporters staged a demonstration in central Nairobi on Tuesday, 19 September, calling for a recount of votes cast in August's annulled election. The demonstration outside the Supreme Court is reported to have drawn hundreds of predominantly youth protesters although there are currently no reports of any significant unrest or clashes between police and demonstrators. The date for the rerun of the presidential election is currently set for 17 October. However, the company providing voting systems for the poll stated on Monday that it will be unable to complete work on electronic voting systems before 17 October.

Those in Nairobi are advised to exercise caution in the vicinity of the Supreme Court due to the potential for ongoing protests and police operations. Travellers should avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Kenya due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as police crowd dispersal operations. Those in Kenya are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness in the run up to the rescheduled elections and should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any planned or spontaneous demonstrations in their particular area of operations.
