09/19/2017 (Colombia) - According to international media sources on Tuesday, 19 September, National Liberation Army (ELN) militants have destroyed a segment of the second largest oil pipeline in the country in the vicinity of Saravena, Arauca province. Maintenance and repair operations are underway. The Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline is frequently targeted by ELN guerrillas who oppose the presence of large energy-sector companies in the country. A bilateral ceasefire expected to take effect in two weeks has been signed between government authorities and the ELN.

Those in Arauca province area advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and to remain apprised of any associated security operations. Travellers should be aware that ELN guerrillas continue to operate in various areas of Colombia and launch frequent attacks against security forces and government infrastructure. Those conducting travel outside of major cities in Colombia are advised to subject all journeys to a comprehensive localised threat assessment and liaise with local authorities to identify areas with active militant and security operations.
