09/19/2017 (Malaysia) - Media reports on Tuesday, 19 September, indicate that security has been increased in Kelantan province along the border with Thailand following the discovery of over 100 trails believed to be used by smugglers. According to police, between 130 and 150 smuggling trails have been uncovered between Jeli and Tumpat prompting an increase in patrols and surveillance operations in the area. Smuggling remains a significant problem in areas along the border with Thailand but the latest operation is believed to have been prompted by concerns over people smuggling due to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine state. At least 400,000 Rohingya Muslims are reported to have fled Myanmar since the beginning of the crisis, predominantly to Bangladesh, but Malaysia houses a significant Rohingya diaspora and trails have previously been extensively used to smuggle migrants from Myanmar into Malaysia.

Those in Kelantan province are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the increased security operations and to remain apprised of any associated disruption in their particular area of operations. Travellers in areas close to the border with Thailand should maintain a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces.
