09/19/2017 (Spain) - According to the Spanish Ministry of Interior on Tuesday, 19 September, members of the security forces arrested an individual of Pakistani origin in the early hours of the morning, suspected to have been self-radicalised and ready to carry out a terrorist attack in the short/medium term. The detainee was likely part of a cell, partly dismantled in June in the same city. Reports indicate that he was very active on social media, mostly spreading Islamic State (IS)-linked materials calling for international jihad and normalising terrorist behaviour. Ministerial sources report that the security forces have arrested 200 jihadi terrorists since 26 June, 2015.

Travellers should be aware that, following recent terrorist incidents in Barcelona and Cambrils, police in Spain are currently on a heightened level of alert and security operations may be launched without warning. Due to the elevated threat from terrorism in Spain, those in the country are advised to maintain a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
