09/19/2017 (Dominica) - Emerging media reports on Tuesday, 19 September, indicate that Hurricane Maria has caused widespread damage on the island of Dominica. Reports indicate that the hurricane strengthened into a category five storm before making landfall. Social media sources indicate that the local radio station has gone offline and that telecommunications masts have been damaged, likely causing disruption to phone and internet services. The Prime Minister of Dominica has also reported that there has been flooding on the island and that the hospital's entire roof is gone and the generator damaged.

Those in Dominica should shelter in place, inside and away from external doors and windows, and monitor local media sources for further weather-related updates. Travellers should exercise a high level of caution in the immediate to medium term and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Travellers should avoid overland travel in hurricane-affected areas due to the high risk from flooding, winds and flying debris.
