09/18/2017 (Afghanistan) - Media reports indicate that at least six people were killed on Monday, 18 September, when their vehicle was hit by a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Kandahar province. According to local officials, the IED is believed to have been planted by Taliban militants targeting security forces but instead hit the civilian vehicle carrying a group of local youths. Roadside IEDs remain a significant threat in Afghanistan with at least 252 civilians having been killed by such devices in the first six months of 2017.

Travellers should be aware that the Taliban continue to carry out regular attacks in Kandahar province which pose a significant threat to civilians. Afghanistan remains an extreme-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security procedures and journey management protocols in place. Clients should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services.
