09/18/2017 (South Africa) - Local media reports on Monday, 18 September, indicate that taxi drivers in Cape Town have ended a strike which saw multiple attacks on commuter buses on Monday morning. The strike was reportedly cancelled following a meeting between local officials and union representatives. At least 52 people are reported to have been injured in the unrest as protesters threw stones at buses in the Du Noon, Borcherds Quarry, Fisantekraal, and Khayelitsha areas of the city. Several major roads including the N1 in Joostenbergvlakte and N7 were also blocked in the protests. At least two buses are believed to have been set alight in the unrest and the Dunoon, Usasaza, Circle East and Killarney bus stations have been closed.
Those in Cape Town are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the taxi strikes and to remain apprised of any further protests. Travellers should anticipate significant disruption to transport services in the city in the immediate term due to the industrial action and should factor this into itineraries. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in South Africa due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence as well as police crowd control and dispersal operations.
