09/18/2017 (France) - Media reports on Monday, 18 September, indicate that multiple demonstrations are expected to be held by trade unions and political groups across the country over the coming week in protest at proposed labour reforms. Road haulage drivers with the CFTC and CFDT unions began industrial action on Monday with around 100 members staging a demonstration outside the Ministry of Labour in Paris and organising road blocks on some highways in the country including around Lille and Saint-Avold in the Moselle department. Further strikes and protests by road transport workers with the CGT and Force Ouvriere unions are expected to be held on 21 and 25 September, including industrial action targeting fuel filling stations. Large scale demonstrations are also expected to be held in Paris within the next week with the left-wing La France Insoumise party calling for a large march in the capital on 23 September. The CGT union has also called for demonstrations by retirees across the country on 28 September in protest at potential increases to social charges.

Those in France are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the industrial action and to remain apprised of any demonstrations in their particular area of operations. Travellers should be aware that industrial action by road transport workers has potential to create significant disruption on affected routes and may impact on fuel availability. Travellers should factor fuel availability into any overland travel plans, minimising non-essential journeys and carrying increased reserves in vehicles. Travellers are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in France, including those linked to industrial disputes, due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
