09/18/2017 (Guatemala) - Media sources report that several indigenous rights groups are planning to demonstrate across the country on Tuesday, 19 September, for the resignation of President Jimmy Morales Cabrera, who has been caught up in a corruption scandal. The groups are also demanding that 107 members of Congress who voted against a reform bill of the Penal code be investigated by the Public Ministry. Reports indicate that up to 100,000 people are expected to march across the country on Tuesday with several institutions including schools holding national strikes on Wednesday. Activist groups are expected to hold a march through Guatemala city on Tuesday, with travel delays being likely.

Those in Guatemala are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness and avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings even if considered peaceful as they can quickly escalate into violence and crowd disturbances. Expect overland travel disruption during the aforementioned dates and allocate additional time for travel within Guatemala.
