09/18/2017 (Iraq) - Media reports indicate that Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi demanded the suspension of the planned independence referendum for the Kurdistan region on Monday, 18 September, after the country's Supreme Court asked for the poll to be delayed. The Supreme Court reportedly ordered a postponement of the planned 25 September poll so as to examine whether the referendum would be constitutional. The ruling followed complaints made by several lawmakers that the referendum would be illegal. However, the orders are not enforceable in the autonomous Kurdistan region and the poll is likely to go ahead as planned.

Those in Iraq should monitor local media sources for further updates on the referendum and associated political developments in the country. Those in the Kurdistan region should be aware of heightened tensions and possible efforts by militant groups to disrupt the poll on 25 September.
