09/18/2017 (Uganda) - Local media reports indicate that at least 14 opposition activists were arrested in Kampala on Monday, 18 September, during a demonstration against a planned constitutional amendment removing the current presidential age limit. The group of youth activists from a group known as The Alternative were reportedly detained after distributing flyers to passers-by in the capital during the protest on Monday morning. However, the group claimed that their offices were raided by police on Sunday night with computers and other campaign materials being seized. The proposed constitutional reform would remove the 75-year-old presidential age limit in a move widely seen as clearing the way for President Yoweri Museveni to stand during the next scheduled election in 2021.

Those in Kampala are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and to remain apprised of any further protests. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Uganda due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence as well as police crowd control operations.
