09/18/2017 (South Africa) - Media reports indicate that police fired tear gas and rubber bullets on Monday, 18 September, as protesters attacked buses in the Du Noon area of northern Cape Town. The unrest reportedly broke out amid protests linked to the ongoing taxi drivers' strike in the city when stones were thrown at buses and police. Buses carrying commuters are also reported to have been attacked in the Borcherds Quarry, Fisantekraal, and Khayelitsha areas of the city. Several major roads including the N1 in Joostenbergvlakte and N7 between the Plattekloof and Potsdam roads are also reported to have been blocked by protests and burning barricades. However, there are currently no reports of any significant injuries from the unrest.

Those in Cape Town are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the taxi strikes and associated protests. Travellers should anticipate significant disruption to transport services in the city in the immediate term due to the industrial action and should factor this into itineraries. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in South Africa due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence as well as police crowd control and dispersal operations.
