09/18/2017 (Bangladesh) - Media reports indicate that around 10,000 religious hardliners are expected to stage a demonstration outside the embassy of Myanmar in Dhaka on Monday, 18 September, in protest at violence against the Rohingya Muslim community in the country. The demonstration by the Hefazat-e-Islami group began at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka before marching on the embassy in the Baridhara area of the city. Police reportedly deployed additional officers in the area on Monday amid fears of violence during the demonstration. It is currently unclear how long the protest at the embassy of Myanmar is expected to last but Hefazat-e-Islami leaders stated that they would lay siege to the building. Bangladesh has seen protests by several groups in recent weeks against the violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state which has displaced over 400,000 Rohingya Muslims since the end of August.
Those in Dhaka are advised to avoid the vicinity of the embassy of Myanmar on Monday due to the demonstrations and anticipated disruption in the area. Travellers should monitor local media reports for further updates on the protest and any associated disruption in their particular area of operations. Travellers are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political demonstrations in Bangladesh due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
