09/18/2017 (New Zealand) - Media reports on Monday, 18 September, indicate that dozens of flights from Auckland Airport (AKL) have been canceled after a pipeline supplying jet fuel to the airport ruptured. Air New Zealand reportedly canceled at least four flights to Australia and 14 other scheduled domestic flights due to the fuel shortage. Other airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Cathay Pacific and Emirates are also reported to be facing disruption to their flight operations from Auckland. The pipeline supplies around 70 percent of Auckland's jet fuel but has been shut down for repairs following the leak with an expected reopening date between 24 and 26 September. The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is reportedly exploring options to minimise disruption from the pipeline shutdown including supplying tankers and drivers to move fuel to the airport by road and allowing commercial flights to refuel at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Auckland to the north of the city.

Those intending to travel via Auckland Airport in the immediate to medium term are advised to anticipate possible delays and disruption and should contact their travel provider to ascertain the status of their flights. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the fuel shortage and associated flight cancellations.
