09/18/2017 (Brazil) - According to local media sources on Monday, 18 September, the military police have been carrying out operations in the vicinity of Morro do Juramento, Rio de Janeiro following repeated clashes between rival drug gangs. Reports indicate that at least 7 people were killed on Friday, 15 September in a series of shootings in the aforementioned area as gangs fought for the control of the territory. Rio de Janeiro police have been struggling to keep control of the outskirts of the city, which have seen a significant increase in criminal activity in the last few months. President Michel Temer authorised the deployment of extra security resources including military troops to Rio de Janeiro at the end of July given the high levels of violence in the area.

Personnel with operations and travel in Rio de Janeiro state are advised to maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness, avoid travel at night, and avoid ostentatious displays of wealth. Criminal activity, in which violence is common, is the primary risk to travellers in major Brazilian cities; as such, travellers should take measures to maintain a low profile, ensuring all movements in neighbourhoods with a high crime threat profile are minimised.
