09/17/2017 (Afghanistan) - According to local media reports on Sunday, 17 September, four people have been killed and a further 14 others wounded in an explosion at a mobile phone market in Khost province. In a statement the Khost provincial police chief, Faizullh Khairat, said that the blast happened around 1200hrs (0730UTC) at the market where locals go to download music and videos to their mobile phones. There was no immediate claim for responsibility for the blast, but the province which borders Pakistan is contested by the Taliban who have banned music from areas that they control and previously targeted such markets.

Due to the presence of Taliban militants and ongoing security operations, travel in Khost province should be limited to operationally-critical deployments. Those in the province are advised to operate under the strictest possible security risk management measures in coordination with local authorities and a trusted security provider. Security procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the evolving local threat environment.
