09/17/2017 (Central African Republic) - According to international media reports on Sunday, 17 September, the UN is seeking to bolster its peacekeeping forces in the country as officials say the security situation in the southeast is deteriorating. In a statement the UN's head of peacekeeping, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, said that a security vacuum had been exacerbated by the withdrawal of United States special-forces troops earlier this year. Hundreds of people have been killed in recent months and more than half a million have left their homes as sectarian fighting between Muslim ex-Seleka rebels and Christian anti-Balaka fighters continues.

Travellers should monitor local media sources for updates on the situation in their particular area of operations. Operationally critical travel in the region should be subject to a thorough localised threat assessment and undertaken with comprehensive security risk management measures in place. Travellers should be aware that the Central African Republic remains a high-risk operational environment and are advised to regularly review security risk management protocols to ensure they remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
